Idle question.

A friend of mine went to work as a host on a sports radio station.

Some quasi-legal stuff: Contract managers/specialists/administrators, tax managers (which is actually sort of functions like a mini tax counsel I think), real estate brokers, site acquisition specialists, claim examiners/adjusters, CFO, directors of business development.

verizon salesman and unemployed. the latter probably being the more desirable of the two

a non-negligible percentage of CEOs were former GCs or at least have law degrees

I don't personally know these people, I've just heard of them through the papers and news and whatnot

How so? Should be exactly how it works out, right? Spend time/money getting a degree, then you do what that degree licenses you to do.

What answer are you hoping for from this thread OP

a career that sounds interesting and somewhat mentally stimulating that your legal training might be relevant to, I guess. And that doesn't have similar work life balance issues

If I've learned anything from the TLS hivemind, it's that the above bolded does not exist

I've seen one person retire early to live on a farm, one who created a start-up (don't know how it's doing), one who works in politics, and another who became a writer.

At the rate I'm going I may also do the latter.

Nah he didn't; it was just a long-time goal of his.

TBH I don't think there's a lot of overlap between completely non-legal things to do and non-legal careers where a legal background is a plus.

Specifically I would like to know how he learned what he would need to do on the farm before starting

I didn't know him well (sorry) so I don't know how he learned; he may be going to school for a bit first and then doing it, I dunno.

He basically retired early so I don't think he was concerned about being profitable so much as doing something he wanted to do for a long time.

There are apprenticeship programs for people who want to learn how to farm, especially for those looking to adopt organic/sustainable high-value farms raising heritage breeds. I read a bit about it, you basically work sixty hours a week for room and board for a couple years then take what you learn and try to get a huge loan to cover startup costs for your own farm. Think I'll stick with writing discovery motions.

I'm an 0L going to school this fall, but my current non-legal exit option/semi-retirement goal is farming. I can say that the easiest way to get into farming is to inherit farmland and equipment. Outside of that, it will be very expensive to break into on any sort of scale that will provide a solid payoff. I am currently a farmer and have been in the industry for some time now, and I can tell you the work life balance is pretty great if you are simply growing things (livestock is a whole other issue). You work really hard, long hours a few times a year, and then a lot of time is spent waiting for things to grow, seasons to change, and the weather to turn in your favor.
