You're giving BigLaw way too much credit. However, I do agree that the summer programs tend to be a lot more organized and regimented at BigLaw than at small-medium firms.

But this type of situation could easily happen anywhere because you don't deal with the "firm" so to speak -- rather, you deal with an aggregation of individuals (attorneys, staff). Thus, any given individual attorney/staff might be more or less organized, considerate, etc. than others, and this is true at BigLaw to some degree. You will find that this summer, I am pretty sure.

So, don't worry about it too much. No summer associate knows anything about being a lawyer - just ask any experienced lawyer. And that's how we all were; no biggie. It's not going to be easy if you are a hard worker, and care about your work product and how others think about you. But statistically, 19 out of 20 people get an offer (less cold offers) at the end. And you gain valuable experience, and they pay you pretty decently, I imagine.
