I'm a 1L summer associate in my home market looking to SA in NYC next summer. I have my own office here with a water view and can't imagine sharing an office. Which NYC firms believe in personal space?

Desmarais. Even 2L summers here get their own window office. 1L summers share a big partner office.

Skadden has all the first years moved to their own offices (with windows!) by like 4-8 months in.

Doubt this will continue to be the case after the move to Manhattan West, however.

^Agreed. I'm hearing rumors (that are probably entirely conjecture) that it will probably be shared internal offices 1-2 years, then solo internal offices for years 3/4, then finally a solo external at year 5 onward.

FWIW - I shared an office in NYC for 2ish years and became extremely good friends with my officemate. Getting my own office kinda sucked at first and made work less enjoyable.

Edit - also didn't help that my first solo office as a third year was an internal office. but still.

Are open-offices the WAVE OF THE FUTURE in New York? My firm was looking into it. I hope not.

I think it always depends on the person. I can't imagine having to share an office with anyone.

Know of a couple firms trying this out in NYC, including mine.

Current market is likely to be one of the last to ever got to this if it does become the next big thing, but the general sentiment is that most people (myself included) will look for alternate employment if office go away.
