Speaking Engagements and Published Articles in Biglaw

Hey guys,

A partner that I do a lot of work for told me that while billing is important, I should be spending time writing articles and speaking vs trying to grind an extra 300-500 hours and get a bonus. My goal is to eventually go inhouse.

Does writing articles and speaking actually help you get jobs both in-house and at other firms? Has anyone actually gotten work or a job from publishing/speaking (either directly or indirectly)?

Heed the partner's advice if you want to make partner.

Idk about speaking engagements, they always seem to be a waste of time. That is because published articles last for a long time, whereas speaking engagements seem so short-lived.
