The banking industry has the same problem. The combination of hours and pressure is what gets you.

Your high-school friend group sounds atypical.

I wouldn't say that's atypical... OP has been relatively lucky.

Jesus Christ. I went to a fairly big high school and knew a lot of people. But still, only know one person that died (OD). BigLaw mortality rate does seem insane compared to the average life.

edit: Actually, is 2600 considered big? if not, nvm

Yeah, didn't realize this was referring to classmates and not friends. No idea how many classmates from high school have died.

Drunk driving was a big one, plus I went to a huge high school. This is not to minimize OPs experience, though. It's all terrible.

DFs been in the game for a while though, right? talking to the slightly more senior attorneys at my firm, it seems pretty norm that they know someone has died in biglaw...

Pardon my ignorance, but do firms typically offer services to combat this or is it taboo to even bring it up?

I think we have a psychiatrist on site once in a while? I remember HR talking about something like that but not sure if it exists or, if it does, if many people know about it.

Bear in mind as well that mortality rates of folks in their late teens are generally much higher than those of people in their late twenties-thirties. Just saying, comparing deaths of high school classmates is not really an apples to apples comparison. A more apt comparison might be mortality among your non-law school college friends greater than three years out... I'm betting it's pretty close to 0.

I don't know what it is about this job, but it definitely leads to despair and feeling trapped and lost, regardless of your situation (especially if you have a ton of debt)
