Bad idea to move from NYC to Texas if goal is Cali?

2nd year associate in NYC biglaw. I am from Texas and looking to get out of NYC as soon as possible. If I were to lateral to a biglaw firm in Texas for a few years, would it be hard to later try to lateral again to California (likely biglaw)?

The reason that I am worried to make the move to Cali now is COL (still have huge debt) and not 100% sure I want Cali or where in Cali. Just know I can't survive in NYC much longer, but don't want to cut off options in the future by making a move and looking flighty.

I went NY --> CA big law, and I don't think so, I actually think this is pretty smart. Are you transactional? If not, I'd recommend trying to squeeze in taking the Cali bar in at some point while you're in texas before commencing the CA lit job hunt. You'll have more options and an easier time. If you're transactional, that bar taking step really wouldn't be necessary though.

What's the difference between NYC and LA besides the weather? Texas sounds like the better move: market pay, low COL, and probably fewer hours than both.
