I'm working half the summer at a large firm as a paid 1L SA. I'm not sure if I should go look for another job for the second half of the summer? My school's career counselor said that working half the summer as a 1st year as a SA is more than enough, but I'm not convinced.

You're absolutely fine. However, if you find some cool opportunity you'd like to do for the second half of the summer, get on it.

One of the rare times that the counselor is right. Unless you are only working like 4 weeks, then you might want to do something as a filler. But employers just want to know that you did something legal 1L. Working at a large firm for the summer should give you plenty to talk about at OCI.

If you are interested in working for a judge or trying something else on your own, that is different. But you don't have to

Why are you only working with them for half of the summer? Most who are doing an SA split are for a reason (already accepted a position with a judge, etc.). I don't think it'll matter for OCI because you're getting good legal experience, but it's just curious that you're starting out with only one half of the summer covered.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Maybe reach out to some professors and try to arrange an RA position? Preferably in the area of law you're targeting at OCI, as RA'ing for a professor in the field would give you something extra to talk about and demonstrate your interest.

But I would just work the full 10 weeks for the firm to make the money

More than enough. Use the rest of the summer to prepare/mass mail for OCI. It'll be worth it. After your SA just spam resumes/coverletters to all sorts of firms because you'll have time and go on a vacation and have fun.

Some second half summer thing shadowing a judge or something would be a waste of time IMO.
