Junior biglaw associate here with decent credentials, I was let go for economic reasons a while ago, now my "grace period" had run out. Need advice on 2 issues:

1. I networked and got my resumes out before my last day, and now I have 2 law firm interviews lined up, how should I explain my situation in the interviews?

2. Outside of law, I am also interviewing for a corporate strategy associate position at a unicorn startup ($1bn valuation +). Previously I got into the final round at MBB but unfortunately didn't get an offer (written case and partner interviews are so hard), was encouraged to reapply this summer/fall. So I'm thinking maybe I could spend 6 months in strategy and reapply to MBB. Possible fall-backs are a). obviously a bigger pay-cut, b). if MBB doesn't work out, going back into law will be harder.

Any advice is much appreciated!

As to 1., if they specifically ask you if you are currently working at your former Biglaw firm, you really can't lie. You will have to tell them you were let go for economic reasons. If you were part of a round of layoffs, advise them of that. If there is a specific economic event that caused them to let you go (e.g., loss of a large client, revenue below forecast), advise them of that. In terms of posture for applying to jobs, being terminated for economic reasons is the next best thing to currently having a job.
