Hi all,

Quick law firm background check question. I recently got an offer from a law firm, contingent on a background check. About a week ago, prior to receiving the offer, I was asked to fill out a bunch of forms regarding employment history, conflicts, and references. I filled out this form pretty quickly, in a large part because I was at work, had another time sensitive offer (so I wanted to get the ball rolling with this firm). I just realized that under my employment history I messed up two of my employment months (i.e. I thought I had transitioned in Oct. when it was actually early Nov.//thought I had started the fellowship late Aug - it was first week of Sept.). I am now worried that, when during the background check they call to verify employment history I will look like a deliberate liar. Hence, I feel sick about it and am wondering what I can do to remedy this. Should I reach out to the legal recruiter and let her know / send an updated form? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So you said one job ended and another one started like two weeks or so earlier than it actually did? I would say the chances of anyone caring about this are close to zero. Relax.

Eh, I don't know how I messed this up. Upon close examination of my google cal history, essentially I said I started two positions a month earlier than I actually had. I said I started the fellowship in August and the consulting gig in Oct. In reality, I started the fellowship in September and it ended in November. The consulting gig began first week of Nov.

Eh, I don't know how I messed this up. Upon close examination of my google cal history, essentially I said I started two positions a month earlier than I actually had. I said I started the fellowship in August and the consulting gig in Oct. In reality, I started the fellowship in September and it ended in November. The consulting gig began first week of Nov.

I still think this is very obviously an accidental and harmless mistake.

I guess since you've discovered the error (and, now, posted about it on the Internet) you're probably better off sending in an amended document and basically say what you said here ("sorry, I looked at my records again and realized these two jobs started a week or two earlier than I recalled").

I'd be shocked if you had anything to worry about here, either way.

Ah, thank you, thank you. I'm going to send in an amended form. Probably typical law student/lawyer neurosis at play. Appreciate the response.
