I worked at a big law firm last summer and ended up moving. I realized that I forgot to update my address with the firm, so I think the W-2 form got sent to my old address and sent back to the firm since I moved.

I've been trying to reach the HR/payroll manager via phone (direct number and firm's general number) and email for two months now, but have been unsuccessful. Every time I've tried contacting the person via the firm's general number, I'm told to leave my information and that the person would get back to me (I've done this a few times without success). What should I do? I would hate to contact the partners/associates about this, but I really need to file my taxes soon because of monetary reasons.

I'm thinking of sending another email (and maybe CCing a partner?). I'm in another city, so visiting the office in-person would be a huge hassle. Advice would be much appreciated.

If you are unable to obtain a w2 from a former employer, there is an addendum you can fill out detailing your efforts to obtain a w2, and your earnings at that company. Including this addendum instead of your w2 should not significantly delay the processing of your return.

I saw that. However, I don't have the pay stubs and other tax numbers that it's asking for because everything was through direct deposit.

Are you returning to the firm after graduation? Couldn't the recruitment manager help navigating the HR/payroll issue, or at least give you a more straight-line in with someone who can help you?

Obviously not familiar with your specific circumstance, but if one person is being unresponsive, you could try working through other contacts at the firm to get who you need to talk to about it with on the phone.

I'm in a unique situation because I didn't go through recruiting for the position. The only people I've had contact with about the matter are the HR manager and the partner, so I don't really know who to go to besides the HR manager. But I'll try calling the general number and asking around.

Did you use adp or a similar company? May be able to get it thru their website.

At the very least get them to give you the firm's FEIN, between that and your account deposit history you should have what you need to fill out that addendum, and it shouldn't be too hard to get ahold of someone in the firm who can give you that number. It'll definitely be easier than getting someone to track down your specific w2, assuming they actually sent it.

Thanks. Do you think I can contact an office in another city or the firm's HQ office and try asking for the firm's central payroll person?

Also, when I call the general number again, who should I ask for exactly besides the "HR/payroll manager"?

I know my W-2 came through the firm's HQ office, so it's worth a shot trying to get in touch with the HQ in case that's the holdup with getting help from payroll. Otherwise if there's associate you're close to, maybe email them to see if they can give you a direct phone number or email address for someone on payroll - it sounds like the firm's general number just isn't being helpful right now.
