Whatever you're comfortable with. I currently live 30-40 minutes from my office (LA). It's not ideal, but it's also not destroying my life. If I work late, it's more like 20-30. I'd like to live closer, but on the other hand, it's a lot more expensive closer to the office. The biggest benefit to living by the office is the ability to duck out and go home but with the option of going back in if someone's looking for you (sorry, stepped out to get my dry cleaning, but there in a couple minutes).

This is really just a matter of personal preference. Obviously, closer is more convenient, but it usually costs more.

I've generally kept my commute in the 30-minute range—which is fairly typical for an associate. But I know several associates with 45-minute (or even longer) commutes.

45 minutes during rush hour or 45 minutes during off peak. Cause that would be uptown or arlington heights.

What neighborhood do you currently live in? Assuming office is in river north or loop.

I'm a 15 minute walk and it's pretty fucking great, although definitely not necessary.

ETA: this is nyc.

I'm an associate. 35 minutes door to door on the L. 17 mins if I'm taking a cab home late. Not bad. And I have a yard.

God I wish I lived in Chicago.

Anything within 30-35 minutes is normal and probably fine. If i were still in Chi i'd probably be in Gold Coast or Lincoln Park somewhere with a <30 min L commute or a <15 minute cab.

I no longer live in Chicago, but when I did, I lived in Fulton River District. There are a ton of condos and apartments that have rooftop pools and other perks. It was a 15 minute walk into the loop and the green/pink take you anywhere you need to go if you're avoiding weather. Plus being near Randolph and River North makes the weekends a lot more enjoyable. West Loop also an option but less convenient.
