How to ask current firm for firm transfer to a different office

I've been at my firm for about 9 months (I'm a lateral). I pretty much dislike the area that I live in. Has anyone had experience of asking for a firm transfer to another office?
Thanks

I did this but after my SA. I did my summer after 2L year in a large texas market and then transferred to DC to begin 1st year job.
Will obviously depend on the group and where partners are located/their willingness to allow transfer. Are you looking to leave your current group (if you are already in one)? I think it is worth a shot to ask. Even if they say no, they could potentially work on a timeline for your move.
Do you work with partners in your intended office? I think that would be a huge plus if you can say you want to work near partner X in the new office. Do you know of any other associates who have transferred in your firm? Having a precedent already set will presumably make the move much easier.

Op here:
I am afraid that they may think I am a flight risk if I tell them I want to transfer to a different office. I'm afraid of being marginalized (maybe I am thinking too much).
Is it better if I go out and find another offer?
