Options for life after criminal defense
Im in criminal defense. I feel like I learn a lot everyday. Some say I am an excellent trial attorney (according to my peers, judges, and juries) and I love the work. I was just wondering what do life look like beyond the criminal defense world. Has anyone made the jump into, civil rights law, PI, government, mid-sized firms, solo etc.?
Any advice is helpful. Thanks in advance!

Former Miami ASA here, 90% + of all the PDs I know went to insurance defense. I know 1 former prosecutor who did about 2 years of defense work then jumped to personal injury, and another who jumped to admiralty.

It's not super common from the PD side (more so for DA's), but you can try to make the jump to local/municipal government. Where I am, we've had people from crim law backgrounds come in and do everything from contracting to civil rights. I'd be happy to answer any questions about it here or in the other thread I made (http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=272463).

I went from public defense to a court agency that deals with similar subject matter. I would target agencies and non profits that represent vulnerable populations (mentally ill, prisoners, child rights, lgbtq). Many of these niche practices have good hours and interesting subject matter, while some others even pay decent. There are certainly circles in the PI community that value the crim defense background.
