Had a biglawl lateral interview three weeks ago, thought it went well. Never heard anything, so checked in with HR last week, and haven't heard back.

Since an email saying "no" would take 2 seconds, I really want to think they are putting together an offer and that's why they still haven't replied. But... yeah maybe not (probably not?).

Is there anyone with insight into this process that can say how likely this thing is at this point?

I waited 2.5 months from my callback to an offer for a lateral biglaw move. Lots of silence in between. My advice is to follow up every 2 weeks.

To be honest, I think it depends on how bad they need the help and how long they have been looking.

My friend got an offer 3 months after he did his call back. He applied during the initial process.

I've gotten 2 biglaw offers. My first offer from application to phone interview took 5 days. Then I flew out the following Friday for an in person interview and I ended up getting the offer on the Tuesday afterwards. From application to offer literally took less than 2 weeks. My second offer was similar. Applied, got a phone interview the following week. Then in person interview the week after and then got hired a week afterwards. Application to offer took 3 weeks.

I think in both cases, they had been looking for a long time (3-4 months) and were extremely busy.

generally that means you'll never hear back but there are exceptions (see above). firms often ghost instead of dinging you.

The only goal of a firm in lateral hiring is to make sure you will accept the offer if you are given one. As others have said, most do not have the common decency to reject and will just never call you back.

I have been told during an interview that I would receive an offer and never heard back. Recruiters always say you definitely got the job. Anyway nobody knows what is happening, but until you get an offer you have nothing.
