Re: Hiring Freezes??
I did practice - white collar and litigation. I can basically guarantee myself an interview for an opening in my number one choice where I used to practice (through connections) but it's a very competitive district.
As for the freeze and new USAs being separate - I completely agree. What my judge said, though, is that it varies from office to office and usually the interim or acting (I know there is a difference) USA has limited ability to hire, at least depending on the proposed USA, methodology, etc. So, independent of any freeze, I presumed there would be a period of relative stagnation.

Re: Hiring Freezes??
I would imagine your judge has better insights than I do; it will be interesting to see what happens. I know my office just posted an opening, so they appear to intend to try to hire before the next USA comes in (presuming anyone is able to hire anyone, of course). But who knows whether they'll be successful (and it may be that the hope is just that getting the job posted would exempt the position from the freeze or put them in a better position post-freeze? It is a replacement).

Re: Hiring Freezes??
He might, but it seems very office-specific. He was acting USA years ago so I'm sure that's what occurred for him but whatever information is available on the ground and in the offices now is likely more relevant today. He also said that his office is "always hiring" regardless of postings which seems to also be an outlier.
Either way, i suppose trying to go back to biglaw for the clerkships bonuses wouldn't be the end of the world. Not ideal though.

Re: Hiring Freezes??
I was just wondering if anyone had any insight into transfers within an agency during a hiring freeze. For example, if I am with HUD working in one division, after a hiring freeze, could I transfer into an entirely new position in an entirely new division? Thank you for any insight you can provide.

Yes, as long as your FTE transfers with you and it's not a new FTE. In fact, this is how many jobs typically get filled in a hiring freeze.Anonymous User wrote:I was just wondering if anyone had any insight into transfers within an agency during a hiring freeze. I love WaPo - all the commenters think the freeze is bogus, except one who's getting shouted down by everyone else.

I wonder how broadly agencies can construe "military, public safety, and public health" who are apparently exempt from the freeze?Anonymous User wrote:trump hiring freeze... hopefully more details will emerge later.

Based on my experience with furloughs, not broadly.albanach wrote:I wonder how broadly agencies can construe "military, public safety, and public health" who are apparently exempt from the freeze?Anonymous User wrote:trump hiring freeze... hopefully more details will emerge later.

Re: Hiring Freezes??
I just spoke with someone at DOJ OARM, and they're operating under assumption that accepted HP offers aren't effected. If text indicates this is retroactive, then I'm fucked.

Re: Hiring Freezes??
I don't see how it could - 1) different branch, and 2) all those judges with term clerks aren't going to be able to keep their current clerks/go without new ones. But obviously I don't know any more than anyone else here does.jbagelboy wrote:Does the hiring freeze affect existing federal clerkship offers that are scheduled to start this or next year?
I would assume no since its a different branch but with trump who knows
Just crossing my fingers that it really doesn't affect transfers.
Edit: lol, my next door neighbor who is also switching jobs w/in the federal government is reading the WaPo article to someone on the phone right now and worrying about what it means, too.

Just heard from someone close to me who accepted a DOJ position that they just got off the phone with his/her section and they have been signaled by higher powers that it may be retroactive

Re: Hiring Freezes??
Yeah he clearly is. First press briefing is a straight attack for reporting facts? Off to a great start. If it is retroactive though, its bad news. I know this person I spoke with will be devastated. DOJ was always the goal in law school and to potentially get it taken away by an orange cheeto would suck a lot.jessuf wrote:This would not surprise me. Re: Hiring Freezes??
For everyone checking in with information, can you add whether your info is for civil/civil rights/criminal? I don't see how even trump could say that criminal AUSAs don't fall under "public safety."
Also, "The memorandum signed by Trump’s is similar to one that President George W. Bush signed at the start of his administration in 2001." http://wtop.com/government/2017/01/trum ... l-workers/
That freeze was not retroactive, and was not really a freeze at all. http://www.govexec.com/contracting/2001 ... eeze/8339/
