The hiring partner will be waiting by the phone up until 5 PM sharp the day it expires; after that they'll be too heartsick to wait for you any longer.
Also best to call earlier so they don't run out of notebook paper after writing [Hiring Partner] + [Offeree] with hearts around it over and over.

So this is obviously sarcastic but is the 5pm on the day of serious? I do have a good reason for waiting if it matters, was about to accept and got an offer for a callback at a firm I would much rather go to but it is the evening of the day before it expires.

Maybe you should ask the firm.

If you're unsure, ask. I would assume that you can accept it on the day it expires, but I also recall a thread from a long time ago on here where someone missed a deadline for a SA position (by weeks IIRC), and it didn't end well for them. If anyone remembers that and has the link, please post!

Just call the firm with the offer and say "I have one more interview that I would like to do before making my decision between yourfirm LLP and thatfirm LP. Would it be possible to extend my deadline to accept until [date]?"
People get so up tight about this, recruiting either will or will not accommodate but they certainly will not silently judge you and plot their revenge. They totally understand how the process goes and have fielded the same request from your colleagues this year and every other year, some of which ended up at their firm some of which didn't.

I accepted day of at a big NYC firm. Based on my conversation with several firms' recruiting departments, the offer is open for you to accept even a few days after the NALP 28 day guideline. That is, if you call to accept on the 30th day, the firm isn't gonna tell you that you're out of luck because you went two days over. This was the implication I got -- YMMV however.

This is amusing. Folks will freely send perfunctory thank-you notes that have no impact on anything. But when it comes to something that actually matters--when and whether your frickin job offer will remain open--people speculate and theorize instead of just contacting the damn firm.

i think there is a nalp rule that you have to reaffirm your interest within 14 days of the offer. but im not sure whether firms really follow up on this. i had firms that explicitly say reaffirm interest within 14 days and some that didnt mention it at all

The approach advocated by rpupkin and MarkinKC is really the only defensible approach, IMO.

What was that hilarious case authored by Thurgood Marshall, about the miners who submitted their filing on Dec. 31 and got owned?

"Candidates should reaffirm these offers within 14 days from the date of the offer letter,
if an employer requests such reaffirmation in its offer letter."
