Has anyone entered compliance straight out of law school, either working for a bank or a corporation? If so, how did you go about this?

I was in compliance for corporation straight out of undergrad, however there were a lot of people with JDs there. I would recommend checking out company websites to see if they have compliance openings. Check out companies in industries that are highly regulated, such as banks, health care, or insurance.

As in house counsel there is a lot of compliance work in the above mentioned industries. Seek an in house job.

How do you get these positions though right out of law school?

Classmate of mine who just graduated landed a compliance position at an accounting firm I think. He just applied pretty broadly. It sounded like a good opportunity.

Unless this is a fallback option for you, I wouldn't recommend doing compliance straight out of law school. If you work in biglaw for a few years in a compliance related area you can then get into compliance at a much higher level and with much higher pay than you would without that experience.

There are a couple entry level compliance positions. Just look at the job section of companies. Additionally, if your law school is located near the undergraduate campus, you could take advantage of the business school's career fair. They might be hiring for compliance positions or at the very least pass your resume along to someone. I have a friend who attended one of the fairs and got an interview for a tax compliance position.

Goodluck!
