The distinction between nationwide and specific markets, as well as the differing bands for differing offices kind of confuses me. For example, consider Morgan Lewis. If you go to their Philadelphia office's page, it's band 1 in litigation and corporate for Eastern Pennsylvania. But then it's not banded in either at all for all of Pennsylvania, instead picking up six new completely different bandings (Antitrust, Bankruptcy, Environment, Labor & Employment, Real Estate, and Tax). But then the Pittsburgh office isn't banded at all in anything, and the Harrisburg office (the only other one in Pennsylvania) is banded in Environment only. Meanwhile, the Philly office is highly banded in corporate nationwide (again, not banded in corporate for all of Pennsylvania).

How the fuck does this make any sense? I have no specific interest in MLB, btw, just using it as a particularly good example of banding fuckery.

I notice this with California as well. I think if it is banded in either the major market or the state you are probably in good shape.

I think that is because Chambers rates Corporate/M&A in some states by region (Eastern and Western PA and Northern and Southern CA) and not state. That is there is no statewide corporate/m&a ranking for firms in PA and CA. Presumably Chambers thinks those region's markets are different enough that regional and not state rankings make more sense. IIRC they rank PE and VC in CA by state though. Know this because I interviewed in both states a while back.

Well Morgan Lewis doesn't have a Harrisburg office, which in itself may be telling of the inadequacy of any ranking system--too many firms/practices to keep up with. If the firm is banded in the state/city, you are probably in good shape.
