Now I know what I want to do (but it's too late)

During the OCI and callback process, I got to talk to a lot of attorneys about their job. I now have a fairly well-defined idea of what my dream job would be. It doesn't look like I'll get an offer from a firm that is both a place I'd like to work, and a place that provides a good, solid opportunity for me to practice that kind of law.

Is there a good way to start building a strong base for this kind of focus shift before/during my 2L SA? My ultimate goal would be to transition to a 3L position at a firm that has a strong practice group in this particular area.

Thank you!

Your post is too abstract; it's hard to provide meaningful advice. What is your "dream job"? What practice area are you thinking about?

This board actually has an incredible amount of experience on it. YOu can post anon. Tell us exactly what you want to do and why you're qualified. Maybe someone can help.

Thanks. I want to do compliance, regulatory, and/or investigations work but I do not want to do it for financial services clients. Given that I looked primarily in NYC and that I wasn't focused on this at the beginning of OCI, it's not surprising that I didn't end up at a firm that has genuine opportunities for me to specialize in this kind of work. I'd like to try and shift gears now that I'm much more solid about what I'm interested in (and not interested in).

So you want to work at a firm? Would you be willing to work in government?

Do a good job at your 2L Summer SA and get an offer to return. Then apply to places before/during 3L and cite practice group as your reason for wanting to switch.

You want to do compliance, regulatory, and/or investigations work, but not in the financial industry. So what industry DO you want to do this work in?

You could do that type of work for pharma right next door in Jersey, but typically you need experience for those jobs.

Tons of DC firms and their regulatory practices do this kind of work for all sorts of industries. There's no guarantee you'll be doing that exact combination of stuff to the exclusion of other types of regulatory work, but a lot of the things you mention is common for regulatory practices in general.
