Apologies if there's already a thread on this - feel free to point me to it!

I am fortunate enough to have a handful of offers at this point (I'm a 2L) and I've narrowed my choices to 2 firms, both in DC.

Basically, what are the pros and cons of splitting your summer? I get the sense that most firms discourage this - can someone explain why? (I know some firms don't even allow this)
Would this work against me when I accept an offer to work at one of these firms at the end of the summer?

I'll be doing second looks at both firms - would it be inadvisable to ask about splitting my summer?

Firms dislike it because they waste time training and paying you only to have you go elsewhere. Your expensive and they don't make money on you so they don't want to lose the investment. Firms hate it for that reason but students like it because it helps them make a decision. I know some schools, mine included, discourage splitting. Though I assume this is so the firm doesn't get fed up with the school.

I don't know why or how it'd work against you in the summer when you accept the ultimate offer.

Unclear how to bring it up unless the firm does so first. It's a touchy subject and they might be upset but they won't revoke your offer just for asking about it.

KMart, I never really got this impression from our school -- I'm interested in how that played out on your end. I've had a pretty different experience, with many in the administration using our extra long summers and the potential for "two summer programs" as a possible selling point. Go figure?

I think if we're talking about 2 firms the school dislikes it (I vaguely remember seeing something on the 2L job search site). This is very different if you're using the extra long summer to work PI or G in addition to a firm. I also could be very wrong . Hope your summer is going well! I haven't seen ya in awhile. I look forward to seeing you again!
