Exit options to go local government

I'm a recent grad who will be starting at a V50 firm in LA doing corporate work. I've decided I like the sound of working for a local government (city or county) and may actually have a very good connection for the hiring process down the line if everything pans out.
However, I'm a little concerned about practice areas. I basically chose my firm for fit and the culture without really thinking about career goals because at the time I had no idea. My firm mostly does public M&A, cap markets, and finance. Most of the exit options are to banks or other similar institutions and I really don't like the sound of that. What practice areas are relevant for a transactional city/county attorney? Am I being silly? Or is a lateral move something I will have to consider in the future?
