Would this be helpful for getting an offer or is it just plain stupid

I just met a 3l at my school who summered at a NY firm that I had a CB with last week. 3l accepted an offer to join the firm upon graduation. Would it be helpful if 3l sent an email to Recruiting as some kind of "recommendation" for me, or would that seem desperate?

I don't see how a good reference could do anything but help you. I'd do it.

Are you the same or opposite sex? How well do you know each other? Well enough for a recommendation?

You just met them and they've spent all of 2.5 months (at most) at the firm. This will make both of you look bad.

This would show some bad judgment on the part of the rising 3L and I doubt it would help you. I would recommend against this.

Didn't see the part about how you just met them. If it was someone you knew well, I don't see how it would hurt. Since you don't really know this person-- little more risky.
