I suppose if you pick a firm that kicks you out the door, firmly, each day on time, then I'd say it's possible. If there's any sort of commute involved, or the very likely possibility you may have to stay late, than I would think it's not such a good idea.

I am with you. But my question becomes is that common or rare? I didn't want to ask during the interview in fear of raising red flags.

If your summer program is typical, there will be social events at least once a week and they will not always be on the same day. I wouldn't want to take classes knowing I would have to miss one or more days a week. Taking night classes, you voluntarily choose to take, is not an acceptable reason to miss social events. Add to that the fact that most people are expecting a high paying job, so are not going to risk messing that up to graduate a semester early or something. I've never heard of someone doing it, and it sounds like a bad idea.
