What to observe during call backs to help make the decision? People will say fit. But what exactly?

Not sure why anonymous. Look at individual practice groups strengths. Similar general "prestige" doesn't mean all the practices are equal, and at the end of the day that's what matters, since you will be entering one of those practices. Look at how you are assigned work at each: do you get put into a group right away, or get some sort of rotation. Talk to past summers.

Do a second look if you end up with multiple offers. It's hard to scope much out about the culture during a callback because everyone is trying to sell you on the firm.

Firms will also greatly vary in the type of deal work that they do too, if you're interested in transactional work. A firm that does mostly sell-side public M&A, for example, will be widely different from a firm that primarily represents financial sponsors in private M&A transactions. Look at the type of clients and work the top firms do and choose the one you like best.

If you decide that two firms do generally the same type of deal work then choose based on culture or training.
