Are you under the misguided impression that large firms officed in skyscrapers pay for associate parking?

(Granted a few do provide an associate discount).

I hope this is LA, because if you're driving to interviews in NYC you have much bigger issues.

It's definitely weird but having a job is better than not having a job. Unless you already have a better offer, do the interview.

Care to explain more? Lets just say i am an entitled prick and let's put that behind us. What of the firm? What does this say about the firm? I personally never had this experience. ive always paid under appropriate circumstances (younger alums coming to see me, mentees etc) and older/more experienced lawyer acquaintances always paid for me. I would think it would be even more true between a job applicant and potential employer.

Every biglaw screener or callback I had in skyscrapers provided validated parking, which is more on point with OP's concern. Tbh, I'd be miffed if I had to pay for parking for an interview, but I'd do it.

This is actually quite impressive.. This is a small firm (OP didn't say, but I'm assuming 10 or less attorneys). The interviewer is likely the owner of the firm, which really means that he is also the CFO, HR, IT person, etc.. These firms are small operations and don't have set "reimbursement policies" the man or woman probably was not even considering that some kid coming in for a JOB, that he is paying the salary for, would be up in arms about parking.

Also, please don't drive to an interview in NYC (if LA, fine). In fact, that might be why the guy had no idea what the parking would cost...because no interviewees drive around the city.

I don't remember ever going on any interviews and had parking paid for by anyone except for biglaw. I once interviewed for product lead at Comcast and paid $30 to park. Paying for interview expenses is a biglaw thing.

When I hire an associate I would not pay for parking. I might take him/her to lunch though (the biglaw in me).

I don't think OP is insane for wondering why parking isn't paid for. I haven't worked in SF/NY/LA but every legal employer I've had either had its own parking lot (current firm) or provided parking passes. Wouldn't it get rather expensive paying for parking everyday? In California, a disgruntled plaintiff might even argue parking is a reasonable and necessary expense of the business that should be reimbursed by the employer.

Edit: but take the interview, obviously.

The OCI model of paying all expenses for interviewees is not the overarching market approach. It's generally the responsibility of the person interviewing to transport themselves to the interview, whether it mean paying for parking, taking a bus, or having a friend drop them off because they can't afford $20 parking.

As to Tyrones point, most office are allocated a limited number of spots with the option to pay for more in those types of buildings. A smal firm is not going to allocate a guest spot for people interviewing. I worked at a consulting firm where the building limited the number of parking spots based on availability so we only had 5, even though we had far more employees that were all making over 6 figures. Everyone figured out their own parking in nearby buildings or took public transit. This is not unusual, which is part of the reason parking garages with monthly parking in commercial areas exist.
