2016 Texas OCI (UT/University of Texas + All Others)

Post by cannibal ox » Fri Jul 29, 2016 12:32 am

I tried to make the thread title broad as well as searchable for current and future classes doing OCI.

Class of 2018

Previous Years
2015 OCI (class of 2017)
2014 OCI (class of 2016)
2013 OCI (class of 2015)

Provide updates for interviews, callbacks, offers.

Ask questions about job fairs, minority fairs, OCI, mass mailing, etc.

Self-Reported Individual 2016 OCI Results
[+] Spoiler
GPA: Top 20%
KJD: No
TX Resident: Yes
Other info: *bad* interviewer (at least at the CB stage)
Screeners: 36 (OCI+job fair)
CBs: 10
Offers: 3 (1 TX and 2 NY)

- - - - -

School: UT
GPA: 3.5-ish
URM: Asian
Texas residency/ties: No
Interview skills: Average
Screeners: 45-ish (30-ish OCI+9 NYJF+5 MM)
CBs: 11 (7 OCI+2 NYJF+2 MM)
Offers: 4 (2 OCI+2 NYJF)

My four offers were also four of my first five CBs, and I doubt that was a coincidence. I sent about 100 MMs throughout the summer. I also turned down some of the MM screeners and one of the CBs. Offers expired before I heard back from three of the CBs.

- - - - -

GPA: Top 20%
KJD: One year off
TX Resident: Yes
Other info: LR, nothing spectacular in resume.
Screeners: 24 all OCI
CBs: 8
Offers: 3, but withdrew a couple before dings..

Note: heard from a partner at one firm that I got dinged by after a CB that they had more students this year who wanted to do lit. than ever before. And there lit group was on the smaller side. He said he was able to place students with my credentials that just said they were willing to try transactional, but I went in with 100% lit mentality. Maybe would have altered that strategy if I did it all again, based on practice group sizes of firms, but happy with where I'm going.

GPA: Top 50%
KJD
Texas Ties: TX Undergrad
Screeners: 20 (all OCI)
CB: 11
CB Attended: 5
Offers: 3 (1 Big3, 1 TX, 1 DC)

- - - - -

School: UT
GPA: Median-ish
K-JD: No
Texas Ties: Yes & Undergrad
OCI Screeners: 23
CB: 8 (1 was pre-OCI)
Interview Skills: Good
Offers: (2 TX, and still waiting some out)

- - - - -

School: UT
GPA: Top 15%ish (well above 25% marker, not quite at 10%).
KJD: No
Texas Ties: Yes
Screeners: 25
CB: 3
CB Attended: 3
Offers: 1 (Texas V100)

Interview skills obviously poor.

- - - - -

School: T20
GPA: Top 20%
K-JD: Nope
Texas Ties: Yes
OCI Screeners: 4 (+1 MM)
CB: 2
Interview Skills: #s don't lie

School: T20
GPA: Top 30% (transferred from another TX school after 1L)
K-JD: No
Texas Ties: Yes
OCI Screeners: 20 (OCI + job fair)
CB: 11 (all TX)
Offers: 5

- - - - -

School: SMU
GPA: top 10%
Extras: LR, off-campus team
Work Experience: probably too much
Texas Ties: resident
Screeners: 23
CB: 2
Offers: 0

- - - - -

School: SMU/UH/Baylor
GPA: top 10%
Extras: LR
Work Experience: Yes, business background
Texas Ties: Texan
Screeners: 16
CB: 10
CB attended: 8
Offers: 7

- - - - -

School: T14
GPA: above median
Extras: Softball club
Work Experience: 2yrs, nothing too special
Texas Ties: Zero
Screeners: 3
CB: 1
Offers: 1

This is just my Texas info. For folks in the future, my first two screeners I gave generic COL based "why Texas" answers. I don't think that's enough for people without ties. The last one I talked about why that firm and it worked better. Obviously anecdotal.

- - - - -

School: Tier IV
Rank: Top 10%
Extras: long successful career

2L OCI

Screeners: 1 DA's office
CB: No

1L, 2L and 3L Job Fairs (Sunbelt & SEMJF)

Screeners
BigLaw: 11. CB. No

I heard the procedure for preselects vs lottery interviews is different at Texas this year. How seriously firms do intend to treat the lottery interviews? Someone I spoke to in the administration suggested they have to take them seriously: because the firms have limited slots and half are lottery, they can't only hire from preselects if they want to make their numbers.

last year, a few firms sent them out the night of the fair; a lot came out Friday and the next Monday, though there were a fair amount of firms that sprinkled invites out over the next week (and even a few weeks).

Slater wasn't on UT's OCI list.

Reading through last year's thread makes me nervous about my top choice going into OCI. Has anyone heard about V&E no offers this summer? Did they have a better rate than last year? I know it's early to think about this before interviews even start but it could seriously impact my final decision.

Not that it means they will/did again, but last year the S&C CBs went out the day after the fair.

When you said University of Texas + All Others, I am assuming you might want some other schools in Texas?
Well, further north of UT, 3.64, prior work exp, LR. Preselects for OCI interview:
Houston:
Andrews Kurth
Baker McKenzie
Latham & Watkins
Porter Hedges
Kirkland & Ellis
BoyarMiller
Bracewell

Dallas:
JW
HayBoo
Fish
Locke Lord
Polsinelli
K&L Gates
Gardere
Fulbright
Hunton
Jones Day
Sidley
Perkins Coie
Weil
Thompson & Knight
Dentons
Baker Botts
Greenberg Traurig

Can anybody tell me positive attributes for Dentons and K&L Gates? They don't have much as far as Chambers-rated practice groups, not great feedback that I can find.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
