I applied kind of on a whim, and honestly was shocked by the offer. I guess burning the bridge wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but I feel awkward about the whole thing.Anonymous User wrote:I imagine the consequence is that you would likely burn a bridge at x agency, but it sounds like that shouldn't matter much to you given the better opportunity for you and your family. People generally understand that these things happen.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I agree that the worst that will happen is that you burn a bridge with the agency, if that. I would also feel awkward, but just write a polite email saying thanks, but no thanks and that you have to do what's best for your family. Do it asap though just out of courtesy (as long as your other offer is solid).Anonymous User wrote:I don't feel comfortable saying which agency, but I do know that the background check has not started yet. At least that.Anonymous User wrote:Which agency and how long ago did you accept? Have you gotten your "official" letter and started the background check?Anonymous User wrote:I accepted an Honors position (not DOJ), but an offer that is much better for me and my family has come up. What are the consequences of backing out at this point?

Thank you for your thoughts. I'm trying to see this as a positive. Someone who legit wants the job will get it, and I will get the job I legit want.Anonymous User wrote:I wouldn't worry about it too much. Has anyone had their references checked but ended up not receiving an offer?

Was this after receiving a tentative offer? Or they checked your references after an interview?Anonymous User wrote:Has anyone had their references checked but ended up not receiving an offer?

Well, it's always possible your references didn't say great things, but I think the most likely scenario is that they check references of all finalists and just ended up going with someone that was a slightly better fit.Anonymous User wrote:After the interview

Maybe people are hearing different things because they applied to different programs. Did you apply as a current clerk or as a future one?Anonymous User wrote:Was told this by the HR director.Anonymous User wrote:Why do you think so?Anonymous User wrote:The SEC is done.Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone know how long it takes to hear back after interviewing with the SEC?Anonymous User wrote:Has anyone who interviewed with the SEC heard anything?

I applied as a current clerk, but I was told specifically that the entire honors program was done - regardless of current or future clerk.Anonymous User wrote:Maybe people are hearing different things because they applied to different programs. Officially rescinded my acceptance at one of the more civil rights oriented agencies. I'm not comfortable with the odds of funding being pulled.

I have an honest question: why are so many people uncomfortable talking about even which agencies they accepted/rejected/contacted, etc.? I swear I'm not being snarky.

I think because there are so few people given offers that being the one to do any of those things would easily out the poster to anyone who knows the whole pool.Anonymous User wrote:I have an honest question: why are so many people uncomfortable talking about even which agencies they accepted/rejected/contacted, etc.? Rejected though, that's a good question, because it shouldn't matter.

Do you think you're going to hear anything during the hiring freeze?

No updates at all. I doubt we'll hear anything during a freeze, and apparently some offers from the IRS have been rescinded. I don't know if this includes attorneys-to-be, but it is definitely something to think about. A bit of a bummer though because I had a very nice interview and never heard another word.Anonymous User wrote:IRS anyone?

Tentative offers for HP are exempt from the freeze. Those still in the interview process are probably another story.Anonymous User wrote:No updates at all.
