Post-SA: how to turn down offer

Sorry, I know this is an annoying question. My SA has been good, but I don't want to do big law and I have another option I'm planning on. We were told to expect calls a few days after we leave (98% offer firm). Thoughts on who to contact and when? Can I just thank them when I get the call and then decline a few days later, or will that be awkward because they'll be expecting me to accept on the spot? Should I say something earlier just in case that would help with decisions (I know they over-hired a little but are reportedly planning to absorb)?

you're overthinking it. wait until you receive your offer. then, later that day or the next day, call or email them to decline, thank them, and explain your reasons.

Not OP here. I'm splitting this summer and will obviously end up declining one offer if I receive both. I assumed emailing to decline an offer was bad form?

A phone call would be better. But if you don't think you'll be able to express yourself as well over the phone as you could by email, then just send an email. They won't be thrilled either way; but no one is going to care as much as you think. The plus-side to an email is that you'll be able to avoid any awkward attempt of them trying to convince you to rethink or make you feel bad about declining. The down side is that it's the wimpier move.

Cross that bridge when you get there and move on.

Don't need to obsess over etiquette. Email the recruiting person. This is business. When firms reject people after interviews they don't call. Half the time they don't even notify you.
