Any point in "networking" (i.e., cold emailing) before 3OCI?

CCN 3L so there are plenty of alums at biglaw firms. 1L grades left much to be desired. 2L saw a marked improvement but not a complete aboutface.

Currently at one of DOJ/FCC/FTC/SEC. There are a few alums of my school here for whom I've done some work. I'm meeting one of them early next week to discuss a month-long project I've been working on. Only problem is, the firms where he bounced around before going fedgov are ones for which I doubt I'd be competitive, improvement or not.

If so, how (whether emailing or via my supervisors)?

what's your question? whether networking can help? yeah it can help. it also can end up being worthless. I dont think I've ever heard of it hurting, but I imagine it would only be bad if you're a prick or something, so don't be a prick.

OK it can only help but I guess I was asking how should I go about it. Just be honest with my situation to my work supervisor (who's also an alum), see if his past biglaw ties can help?

Ask him for people he suggests I email? Then in my emails to them, how do I acknowledge the elephant in the room, which is the fact that I'm a rising 3L who didn't spend his 2L summer at a firm and the reason for that is mostly academic?
