Midsize law how much to ask?

Hi TLS,

I have an interview in a major market for a midsize law firm (not nyc or sf) for a Jr. Associate position in the tax exempt world. The firm is about 100 lawyers. The application asks for minimum salary requirements...but I can't find anything online (glassdoor, nalp etc) regarding how much associated make there except for one associate salary that was about 150k and one senior associate salary that was 170k. Since these salaries don't say how many years in the associate is, I don't know where to start. Any idea how much I should ask for the minimum salary? No idea about bonuses or billable hour requirements yet

Thanks in advance!

I seriously doubt you have any negotiating power in the compensation conversation.

Not sure here but always better to start high than start too low.

Start at $190k. Mention that it's the actual market.

That's probably true, but the OP still has to come up with a reasonable sounding number for the application, right? (op, I'm sorry that I don't know what that would be.)

Can you give a few more details about what type of work you'll be doing? PM me if necessary.

I'd default to market salary for your class year for your market. If it's less, let them bring it down.

personally i wouldn't post 160. sub-market "biglaw" or "large boutiques" in major cities start 135k/145k. that's probably reasonable and close enough for just form-filling.

Depends on the market. Lotta midsize firms in major markets (SF, NY, LA) will start first years at market (aka 160k or maybe even 180k now). Just the bonuses and raises are way less. Think the top 100 to 300 type firms.

i'm sure if the firm pays lockstep then it wouldn't be asking OP for salary requirements.
