If a firm prefers, say, top 20% and your rank is top 22% are you likely to be disqualified for this? Anyone have luck applying just outside the firms preference?

If they have the same preference for every school, then at least at Cornell you can safely ignore it. If your school has a low ranking or that preference is school-specific, I'd probably pay more attention to it. Why bid on a place where you're already at a disadvantage?

I have an unlimited number of bids, for a limited number of employers coming to OCI. The more interviews you attend the better chance you have of scoring a job.
I just can't square how someone would bar top 22% when they prefer top 20%. A 2% margin of error for law school grades, especially taking into account classes like legal writing which are obviously bias, seems completely reasonable.

Because you have to have a cutoff somewhere.
In my experience, most cutoffs have been soft.

Does that mean non-strict compliance.

Yes, soft means non-strict compliance.

If you have an unlimited number of bids, you have nothing to lose. Apply. Because I doubt they care that much about an arbitrary number.

stated class rank cutoffs meant virtually nothing at my school (as in, very soft). probably a hangser-on from when there were GPAs and more letter grades.
where do you go to school?

Middle of the pack T1, Snell is the benchmark for Biglaw.
I talked to some 3ls and they confirmed what you said J-bagel boy. Having said that I'm not feeling very optimistic about my chances for Biglaw. Although I am young and have substantial ties to the area, my GPA is weak and I'm not on LR.

you say you are young as in that's a good thing. Do not play that up in interviews; it is a bad thing

In my experience they've been soft. I was bare top half of my class and still applied to places even though they had stated class rank requirements. I don't think I applied to top 10% requirements, but, if I were closer to top 20, I probably would have applied to those anyway.

My firm had a top 20% cutoff at my school. I was top 1/3 (barely) when they hired me. YMMV
