Will Brexit Screw Us?

Post by WinSome » Fri Jun 24, 2016 1:05 am

As someone who is starting as a corporate associate in the fall, I'm a bit worried about Brexit's potential impact on the US economy. Now that it looks like the UK will be exiting the EU, will it lead to another economic downtown? Personally, I think the impact will be limited to the European market, specifically the pound will go way down. However, with the global economy, you can never be sure the impact on other markets. So what do all of you think, is Brexit going to fuck us?

SA'ing at a Cap Markets heavy firm. I'm getting hardened to the idea that I won't come out with an offer.

It's alright. It's late enough that they probably won't rescind our offers until after the bar.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see what you're so worried about? Companies still have funding demands and all those big corporates that have taken a ton of work in-house are going to start hunting for big firms that can advise on their "simple" debt programs.

If the Brexit causes a recession or some sort of global economic collapse, we might want to start worrying, but right now it looks like this is going to create a bunch of legal work.

you guys need to chill or else you're in for a long career. if youre already freaking over britains EU pullout, how are you going to react once france and germany and scandinavia follow suit.

i jest bc you'll be fine - they're going to fire the most expensive senior associates/of counsel/non-equity partners

Attorneys with experience of international treaties will be in huge demand in London for years.
Good news for recent American law school graduates then.

Unprecedented uncertainty --> Companies hold off on seeking credit to see how things shake out + financial institutions get stingier about extending credit to see how things shake out --> our jobs in structured finance literally disappear

No we will be fine. The US stock market, commodities markets, and your 401(k) or retirement accounts will take a beating for a short period of time, but that is about it. It will be back to business as normal within a month or so.

Isn't the pullout happening slowly over the next like 2 years too? Presumably lots of time for non politicized negotiation within that time period. Obviously immediate market reactions are bad but hopefully not too bad over medium to long term.

I don't know. I'm pretty relaxed about it overall, but it seems like all the incentives push in favor of the negotiations being highly politicized.

Yeah but two years of unpredictability is pretty bad.

Impossible to say, but certainly likely.

I imagine 3L OCI was already being at least partially cut by raises.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
