Would you help this partner in this situation?

I am a SA and needs to secure a fulltime position. My firm doesn't guarantee post employment. So far, I think I have made a good impression on a partner who makes a decision on hiring. There is another partner that I dont like and has mid-level influence on hiring.

Somehow he gave some low importance work and after completing the work, I did some digging on my own after work (just out of curiosity) and found good info about the deal he is trying to close. It is about client development in a non-legal capacity. He would be thrilled about this info and normally I am more than happy to give this info to other attorneys but like I said I really dont like him.

What would you do?

I wouldn't say anything because there is a reasonable chance this information won't actually be helpful at all.

This info would be quite helpful, and he doesn't know about it.

Whether you like a partner or not shouldn't have anything to do with how you do your job.

That said, I'd be really surprised if this info actually did matter. But assuming for the moment that it does, handle it the same way you'd handle it with a partner you like. How is this even a question?

Because it is NOT my job and I dont want to help people that I dont like.

How do you know this? You're an SA but seem to think you know an awful lot about how the firm is run and what information other senior people don't know but would like to know. Just curious why you feel this way because this seems like a weak troll at best.

You may need to get over that latter hangup.

helping the partner or not is neither here nor there. i'd worry more about suppressing manifestations of your intrinsic pettiness and narcissism

Can anyone just answer my question, rather than judging based on limited experience? Did I mention anything about how the firm is run? The world is pretty big, kids. Sigh. I can't tell you how because of privacy concerns.

If you really think that the information is helpful and you would give it to a partner you did like, then give it to the partner you don't like. Again, not really a question.

(Not saying whether giving unsolicited info is a good idea, but whether you like the partner or not doesn't come into it.)

I would not help them in this situation. He did you wrong and you should put him on your list.

First, you got answers. Second, no, because it is a petty question with an obvious answer. What's more interesting and entertaining is your attitude towards the situation.

I believe you mentioned in the OP that this partner has hiring influence which sounds like something about how the firm is run.

Just tell us what the information is.

It's highly unlikely you have anything meaningful to contribute as summer associate beyond bar tabs for associates.

How do you know this? What does "makes a decision on hiring" and "has mid-level influence on hiring" even mean?

I highly doubt that any information you have regarding client development in a non-legal capacity will be helpful to him, at all.

No, when you wrote your first post, my original post did not include that hiring power. I updated my post afterwards. So you seemed to refer to what I wrote about critical info about client development. And I was saying that it is not about how the firm is run. It just depends on what you or I mean by it, it is the risk of using a general word. No need to argue about it here.

You shouldn't keep all that brilliance to yourself, OP! Obviously you're on track to be SA of the century with your keen research skills and tremendously-helpful-yet-undiscoverable information. This find could make you famous. I wouldn't just sit on it.

This is one of the most bizarre questions/scenarios I've ever seen on TLS

You updated 3 minutes before I posted. You also seem awful based on this limited interaction. Lucky for you, there is room for awfulness in our profession. Good luck.

This can't be real, but on the 1% chance it is: give the info to an associate you trust and who is connected to the matter or regularly works with the partner. This gets the info to where it needs to be, mitigates the downside risk of delivering irrelevant or redundant material to a busy and important person, and preserves the upside to your reputation if it actually is helpful.

How come you guys (most lawyers?) have such a limited perspective yet dont even realize the fact you guys are?

It is an European market that the firm has been trying to enter and I used my personal family contacts. Who said anything about traditonal legal or non legal research? I understand that legal research and legal writing are your whole world at this moment but please open up eyes. Or dont write this type of an inflammatory post at least.

If I could I would just delete this post. I find TLS very helpful but not for this post. Useless reaponses.
