Hey hey,
Does anyone around here know which firms in Texas have strong tax practices? Specifically interested in Dallas (or Austin - it's a pipe dream, I know, I know).
(I did try searching on TLS and couldn't find anything on this topic. If I missed a thread accidentally, would someone please post a link? That would be awesome

)

What kind of tax? (Corporate planning? Private client? Controversy? Oil & gas? EBEC? Transfer pricing?)

Not OP but also curious. For me, it'd be mostly corporate planning and transfer pricing. I'd prefer to avoid oil & gas and private client matters.

Chambers ranks big firm tax practices/lawyers. Not sure if that's helpful at all.

Best firms in Dallas for federal tax planning are BB/V&E, TK, and maybe HayBoo. That's probably the end of the list in terms of actual tax structuring, giving opinions, etc. I interviewed at HayBoo for tax and was told during the interview that what they do isn't exactly tax law, maybe more like tax compliance (e.g., if you're client is a domestic C corp buying all the stock of a $10M domestic C corp, there isn't really much to do). Someone can correct me if that is the wrong impression - I don't mean to knock them and am just relaying what I was told.
Best firms in Houston are BB/V&E, Latham (almost exclusively MLP issues), and Kirkland. Kirkland hired three people recently from BB but they haven't built up the group beyond that yet.
Also NRF and LL in both Houston and Dallas.

Oh this is helpful - I had no idea they did such specific rankings by state as well as practice group. Thank you!

Absolutely. That's the long list of the top firms. If you have the option, I would choose BB/V&E/Kirkland/Latham in Houston or BB/V&E in Dallas.
