Why does anyone do biglaw in NYC?

First of all, everyone in the city seems miserable, so I don't even understand wanting to live there. There are other exciting and interesting cities.
Second, people who work at big law firms in NYC seem even more miserable than everyone else who lives there. Biglaw isn't fun anywhere, but other markets are much more chill on hours and working from home.
Is this just law student/lawyer masochism at play?

As has been discussed hundreds of times (use the search function), some combination of personal reasons, prestige, lack of choice, exit options, experience, training, actually liking NYC, and I am sure a dozen or so other reasons I am forgetting.
Also, outed for anon abuse.

If you don't like NYC then don't come here.

Sets you up to do a lateral transfer to a market that you want in the future, but didn't feel safe bidding for at OCI. Even if the lateral transfer doesn't work out, trying to lateral while you have a job in hand servicing your debt is a hell of a lot less risky than putting your eggs in a basket for which you lack ties to during OCI and striking out. This may be less of a thing now that firms are increasing hiring, though.

on top of everything else everyone has mentioned (or maybe part and parcel), NYC is a competitive city for professionals and people thrive on that here. as Ol' Blue Eyes said, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. so if you want to be the best you have to compete with the best.

If everyone in the city seems miserable to you, that likely has to do with your own bias. I loved living in NYC, and look forward to moving back. Most people I know, and people in general, love living in NYC -- especially during your 20s. Those people don't post on internet forums about their love of NYC though; only those who don't like it tend to spend their free time venting about how terrible their lives are. It's not for everyone, that's for sure. There's a lot of pressure and competition, but also a lot of extremely smart interesting people, and no shortage of things to do at any time of day/year. Do I wish it was cheaper? Sure. Are their places that are terrible? Yeah, don't go there. Do I appreciate it more than ever after living in a different city? Absolutely.

I hear that all the best POKEMON are going to be in NYC in Pokemon Go. Meanwhile the midwest is just gonna be filled to the brim with nothing but RATTATAS and PIDEGOTS.

Something like half of Biglaw associate jobs are in NYC. If you're median or below pretty much anywhere, targeting another market is a giant strikeout risk.
Hard to say how many people in NYC would rather be somewhere else, but couldn't get a job in a different city. That's my boat. We're not a majority of NYC associates, but there's a decent number of us.

Yeah I'm not really *from* anywhere but I really want to move to San Diego or Denver or Boston or some other cool city. Actually got a couple Boston callbacks with precisely zero ties but it didn't pan out. NYC is just a "look at my fancy experience" stopgap to get other cities to not give a shit that I have no ties

Not my favorite city, but Chicago has 95% of what NYC offers, but it costs 30% less.

Why does anyone do anything anywhere? Some combination of opportunity and personal preference I suppose.
