It depends on how set you are on LA vs. how risk adverse you are. Michigan does place a good amount of people in CA; I don't think you'll have a huge problem with your stats and ties. Off the top of my head I know people who went to Skadden, Milbank, Latham, and GDC. If you're gung ho about LA I'd aggressively bid LA, then you can have a few NYC firms as a backup.

Recent Michigan grad here.

I did not bid LA but based on my friends who went to LA, your gpa should be fine. For firms that only allow one bid, choose LA - your gpa is high enough and your strong ties will help (especially if you went to USC/UCLA for UG). If I was you, I would bit almost all LA (25) and save the last 5 or so for very high GPA firms in NY because there are often open slots for those firms (think Davis Polk, Kirkland, etc.) or they are firms that are not put on the top of most students' bid list (such as Mayer Brown, etc). This way, you'll interview with all the LA firms you want and have the top NY firms as your back up.

I would also reach out to a rising 3L or two who are currently summering in LA for more bid specific advice. Even if you don't even know them, do it. I'm sure they will help.

Congratulations on your gpa and good luck at EIW.
