I'm in basically a tertiary market and the firms don't pay attention to what NYC does. I guess first years are going to have to keep billing 1900 to 2000 to make $100k - $110k (if you're lucky you can work at the firms that want you to bill nyc hours for $120k).

My first year my salary back when the NYC market was $160k was $75k for a 2000 billable requirement. I feel the pain.

My firm JUST raised salaries and went more lockstep this January, probably due to the crazy NY bonuses. I am very happy with the salary increase, but no way they move again based on this. (Then again, aren't market-comp people concerned that the $180k will just come out of their aforementioned crazy, very recently increased bonuses? I would be.)

Same here. Firm just went to ny scale in tertiary market. Though col is insanely cheap so there is that. But still should have gone to Winston.

If you're actually with Covington, what's the office like right now? How mad are people?

That was a weird move in terms of how they rushed in with the NY only bump. It's like they're trying to start a trend for others to follow.
But now if they are forced to come up to (what I hope is) the new market in all of their offices, they'll just look dumb.
Would have been better to just wait.

Work for the Feds. We haven't even received a full COLA raise since I started working in 2009. But at least I typically work a <40 hr workweek!
*Nobody said this was a BigLaw only thread.

State employee in a tea party state here. Hoping to land a sweet $.10 an hour "merit based" raise this year!

A better reason to do it would be that I see people here who are making less than they could in BigFed but working more hours.

What is the full raise?
It's supposed to be tied to inflation. We had pay freezes from 2011 – 2013, and 1% raises annually since then. From the late 80's through the early 2000's when my Dad was a Fed, the raises were usually around 4% a year.

I'd take dem small raises for the opportunity to basically never get fired
