I'm pretty built so dress shirts always fit me a little bit awkwardly, at least the shirts from every store I've ever bought from. I fluctuate a bit, but currently sitting around 43" chest and 32" waist. Tall too, so 36" sleeves. But since I'm at a pretty low bf currently, it only takes a couple days of high carbs to bloat up to like a 44-45" chest and 33" waist. But I guess that's a diferent problem? And Currently probably a 16.5" collar or hair under.

Depending on brand, when I buy shirts, I either try (A) to look semi-OK on my waist/stomach, but then they are suuuuper tight on my chest, or (B) fit my chest or neck and it looks like I'm wearing a fucking blouse on my waist and have fucking flying squirrel wings from my under arms to where I tuck my pants in. Even if I buy the store's slimmest cut.

I've bought dress shirts from: Express (the best fit so far, but the sleeves are a little bit short because I just by a large, no actual sizes), Banana Rep (even the slim or tailored fit or wtv they call it is very blousey, and the same problem with only have size L), and Brooks Bros (the worst looking clothes I've ever seen I swear you are too skinny to shop there if you are under 300 pounds even the extra slim looks like a goddam prom dress).

It's not a problem when I go out because then I can just buy a tighter shirt and unbutton a couple more buttons and leave it untucked. But in the office I've always ended up wearing the fucking parachute cut for a fat fuck shirts and feel like I look like complete garbage

What do? How much does it cost to tailor a shirt? I'm not really tryna drop $$$$$$$$$ on work clothes... Anyone know of like cheap shirts made to your measurements?

I get custom, basics run in the $130 range give or take. It's cheaper than Eton's slim fit extra long sleeves ($240-ish), but the material's not as nice or expensive as a custom Eton ($400-ish).

There are apps and other cheaper custom options, but I go in person to a tailor since touch-ups and alterations can add up otherwise.

I'm the same--nothing fits me. I got (as gifts) several slim fit Eton shirts, but I wouldn't pay that much myself-- plus they can get tight around my shoulders. I'm looking to get some tailored shirts too

I get BB shirts tailored every time I buy new ones. My tailor does them each for like $15-$20, depending on how many I'm getting done. I agree they come with way too much material, but any decent tailor can make them look like custom shirts that fit perfectly.

I've never done this but if $15-20 could make it tailored to your exact measurements, that's a pretty great deal. Does anyone have a tailor in Manhattan?

Check out Spier & Mackay. Good reviews on Styleforum and similar sites.

They do MTM, you measure yourself in around 10 places and input, select collar type etc. etc. Tons of different fabrics.

Shirts are $99, $20 off each if you buy three or more.

Caveat though is that you can't get a full refund if you're buying from the US - site credit only.

Proper Cloth is the answer you are looking for. The price ranges from $ 89 ~ 300 but the quality of the $89 one is nothing short of Hugo Boss IMO. By far the best bang for the buck for shirts and I highly recommend you visit the store in SoHo to get the perfect measurement. Just keep in mind that it would take about 2 weeks to get to you though.

No one can tell your shirt is too big if you tuck it in. If you get fat you'll be happy you didn't waste the money on a tailor.

Not in NY/anywhere close to a major metro either. When I moved from NY, I got local recommendations from partners/clients, you might try asking around.

I second Proper Cloth or Ratio (https://www.ratioclothing.com/). It's not cheap but the quality is spectacular.

Mizzen and Main is worn by a lot of athletes. And they have a trim fit that tapers in. But they're $125/shirt.

Buy a shirt off the rack in your price range that you like the material of and isn't too tight anywhere. Then just take it to a tailor and get it altered. It's not that expensive and you'll feel more comfortable and look much better.

Accidental anon. I get all of my shirts tailored though because even if you are normally proportioned, it's still rare to find a shirt that can't be improved at all by getting alterations done.

I get all of my button downs tailored. If you're in an area with a relatively cheap cost of living, the cheapest option is to find a shirt that fits in the shoulders and neck, and has an appropriate arm length. Take this shirt to a competent tailor and get the sides taken in. If you're feeling fancy, get darts added in back, too. When I was living in NJ, it was $15 for sides, $10 for darts, so I was looking at a total cost per shirt of maybe $55.

If you're in an area with a higher cost of living, tailoring is not so economical a choice (sides + darts would run me $45 in DC), and it starts to make sense to look at cheaper made to measure clothing. I'm actually about to get some shirts from Proper Cloth ($85 per shirt), and in theory it should fit like a glove.

Can you explain the math there? Were you paying $40/shirt? That seems ridiculously low.

Yeah, I got all of my dress shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt, mostly during their $30/shirt sales. They're not the highest quality shirt in the world, but the value proposition at $30 is undeniable.

Happy to. I ordered a few batches of cloth swatches, and when I get all of them back, I'm going to order a shirt and see how it goes.

My husband is built like you OP, although I think even taller (arms >40"). He gets his dress shirts made because anything that is long enough (both arms and torso) is way way way too wide. Can be cheaper to just get shirts made.

(Not as relevant, but I also get dress shirts and suits made for similar reasons.)
