Hello everyone:

First, does the USAO in Central District of California hire from DA's Offices? More specifically the Los Angeles DA's Office? I know they prefer BigLaw or clerkships, but about what percentage are hired from the LA DA's Office?

Second, does the USAO in Central District of California do higher profile crimes than the LA DA's Office? I know USAO does more bigger scale crimes, but I was curious if they also do higher profile crimes such as OJ Simpson or Phil Spector.

Higher profile is going to completely depend. They will do federal crimes. They're probably never going to do an OJ or Phil Spector because murder is under state jurisdiction (unless it's in a national park or on a reservation or part of some organized crime ring, or the victim is a federal employee, or it's an act of terrorism. But garden variety wife-killing is state). So it depends on what you consider high profile and if any of them are federal crimes. CDCA isn't going to prosecute based on who the defendant is, but based on the offense. If Steven Spielberg gets caught emailing child porn across state lines on a studio's computer, that would likely go to the feds. If he runs over George Lucas with his BMW it will be state.

(There may be some instances where either state/federal jdx is possible and then who the person is may come into play for determining which entity will prosecute. But it's not simply going to be "this is higher profile so the feds should take it.")
