2l summer: AG's vs. IBM

I have two offers for my 2l summer: 1) AG's antitrust division and 2) IBM's procurement professional position. IBM is appealing because it pays fairly well, while AGs is unpaid, but the IBM position is non legal (it deals with a lot of contracts, negotiations, etc. but you don't need a JD).

I'm in the top 30% at UT/Vandy/UCLA, and my postgrad goal is to either get a fed clerkship or snag a firm job during 3l.

Does it make more sense to take the AG's job, even though it's not paid, because it will be better to talk about in interviews during the 3l job hunt?

Does IBM hire out of the summer program? If so, take it. If not... maybe a toss-up. Seems bold to do a non-legal position 2L year. You're in a tough position for clerkships and firms, though, so you need to be thinking about what your goals #3-10 are.

They do hire out of the program, but it's not a job I would want to make a career out of.

Then I wouldn't do it for the summer. You need to be getting decent legal internship experience if you want to get a legal job. But again — I think you need to have a plan other than federal clerkships or major firms.

AG gig. There's really no competition there based on your goals.

It will suck to not make money during 2L summer, but as someone who went through it, it's not the end of the world.
