Out of curiosity, how many hours did you bill starting from your first year? I wanted to see what the actual data looked like, which I plan to compile into a spreadsheet. Why? No reason really. Just bored, curious, and want to see how I actually rank in terms of hours.
I'll start:
Market: NY
Vault range: V100
Practice area: IP lit
First year (2015): 1940
Second year (2016): on pace for 2000

I just checked and I wouldn't say most. Only found one firm (Cadwalader) out of 10+ searches that posted average hours.

Are averages reliable? Do they control for people who take maternity leave, etc.?

Just put a note next to the year if there's some special circumstance? This isn't going to be submitted to some peer-reviewed journal or anything.
