What is the standard turn around time? How do most firms give out offers? Rejections?

I'm curious about this--particularly as to AmLaw100 firms. If a firm doesn't get back to you within in a week (like they said they would try), should it be presumed that it is a ding? Is it ok to check on status with HR?

When I went through this, I met with 3 firms and had different milestones.

Firm 1: Had first (and only) interview. Was told that decisions would be made within a week. Took 3 weeks before the offer came.

Firm 2: Had first interview. Not told anything about time. Was contacted and scheduled for a second interview (second interview was 1 week after first interview). Was told they would be in touch "soon." Offer came 2 weeks after first interview, 1 week after second interview.

Firm 3: Interviewed 1 time. Was told that they would like to have someone in the seat within 2 months (but didn't say when they were looking to extend the offer). 4 weeks later, firm requested a second interview.

For both firms that gave offers, partners asked me to give them time to let the process run its course -- other interviews had been scheduled before they met with me so they needed to honor those and additional approvals were required beyond the people I met.

There is no standard and there are no rules. Next-day offers are possible. I got a lateral offer from a firm 4 months after the interview.

I'm actually wondering the same thing.

I had two offers from lateral positions from big law firms.

Firm A- posted job on a Tuesday, applied to job Wed l, got an email to schedule a phone interview Thursday, had the phone interview Friday. On Monday was invited back to in person interview that Friday. An offer was made the following Tuesday.

Firm B - job had been posted for weeks. Applied got an invitation for a phone interview a week later. Then after 3 days invited to an in person interview. After the in person interview, I waited 3 weeks before a formal offer.

Then my friend told me about his process:

Applied for a job, waited three weeks before getting an initial phone interview. Then waited another three weeks to get the in person interview. Had partner meetings in the morning and was given an offer immediately after lunch ! Crazy!

I'm going through this process again so would like to hear about other people's experiences.

When I lateralled the first time (I was a 3rd year), it was:

Firm 1 - screener interview with associates 2 weeks after submitting application, interview with partners 1 week after screener, offer 3 weeks after interview with partners.

Firm 2 (my current firm) - interview with partners 1 week after submitting application, interview with assocs/partners 2 weeks later, interview with more assocs/partners 1 week later, offer 3 weeks later

The whole process seemed to take a long time.

I'm going through this too. Got a nice e-mail a couple of weeks after my interview asking me to hang tight for another couple of weeks. Now it's four weeks from that e-mail and nada. Figure the prospects look dim, but a ding letter would be nice so I can close the file.

Has anyone been asked to fill out a conflict form of all current clients and adverse parties BEFORE receiving an initial offer? I know most offers are contingent on the results of a conflicts check, but I am curious if there are firms that conduct conflict searches before extending a contingent offer.

I received a conflict form before an offer. I submitted it exactly one week ago and I have not heard anything. I thought it was odd that the conflict check came before the offer. Since you posted almost 1 year ago, I would be curious to know if you received an offer and how long after the conflict check?

Different anon. But the same thing happened to me. I got the offer the afternoon I sent in the conflicts forms.
