Healthcare Coverage for my Dad at Big Law

I'm set to be an SA at a big law firm this summer and wanted to add my dad onto my policy once I started working. I know the answer to this question will probably vary from firm to firm but I just wanted to get a general sense of whether this was something that was available, and if so, at what cost.

Thanks!

That's not how that works.

For most places, you can only get coverage for your spouse/kids.

If your dad lives with you as a dependent, you can add him. Otherwise, you'd be out of luck.

My firm won't do this even if the person is a dependent. :(

Isn't this what ObummerCare was supposed to be for?

My firm it was spouse and kids up to age 26. I wouldn't even ask about doing this because it's just not the way health insurance works. You will raise eyebrows, especially just being there as a summer.

If you absolutely must know the answer, wait until you get your card and call the health insurer directly. By the way, my part of the premium for two people with the highest level of coverages, including eye and dental was about $580 a month.

If you are in NYC you might be able to find a plan for him through the state of NY.

You aren't going to have employer sponsored insurance as a SA

There's a way to legally adopt your dad, and then have him as a dependent. Most big law policies limit themselves to wives and children anyway, and you don't get health insurance during your SA - no 10 week employment will give you that. You're best served buying insurance, because even if you only make 31k, the penalty for not having it is more than for having it so you're paying more to take on risk not having insurance.
