Men's Hairstyles

I'm starting my 2L SA in NYC in a few months and I'm curious what kind of hairstyles are seen as unprofessional or inappropriate.

I usually keep my hair faded up on the sides and a little longer on top, spiked into a subtle point in front. Almost like a fohawk, only not running down the full length of my head.

I also occasionally just buzz it all over but that can have a pretty paramilitary/American History X vibe.

Either these acceptable?

Yes, a fohawk is a great way to be on the partnership track.

This thread cannot be productive without pictures. Words can't really describe a haircut.

Both of those are fine. I've rocked a fade as a white guy in multiple markets biglaw Jobs and definitely looked better than average. There are ppl in every office that look like straight fucking garbage 100 pounds overweight no idea how to dress themselves etc. Then there's the gay guys I've seen with the flamboyant af hair. I really don't think anyone cares. Just look clean and you're good.

The most common men's hairstyle in biglaw is balding and/or receding hairline.

The spikes will work, but only if you frost the tips. Just the tips.

+1

As a male, I recognize that the appearance bar is set so ridiculously low for men that it's almost laughable. I view myself as average (if not a step below average) in terms of caring about my appearance. My morning routine is 30 minutes max (which includes at least 15 minutes worth of eating cereal - I shower at night). But I received numerous, genuine compliments in biglaw about how "put-together" I always looked (in other words, my shirts weren't horribly wrinkled, my hairstyle was fairly clean cut, and my gut doesn't hang over my belt).

The hair styles you mention are both fine as long as they do not appear obviously offensive or weird looking.

I think the rule of thumb is that if your hair is attracting attention/distracting, it's a no go. More leeway is given to minority though, so your mileage might vary depending on your race.

I got a lot of comments on my haircut my first day but it turned out that it was just the dicks I sharpied onto my forehead

Can you put a photo to show your hairstyle.
