Its not hard to believe. People work as lawyers until they're 80 years old and after 10 years at anything... You're bound to make some money. And $144,000 median is pretty easy to imagine when you're looking at a field where the top 100+ firms are paying 130k or better and as much as 180k in some cases (to say nothing for bonuses). Even in mid-law, after a few years, you're making well into the mid 100k range... The real problem with the legal profession and what people on here correctly rage against is the cost of education when comparing that cost to starting salaries (which are sometimes as low as 40k). If the cost of legal education (and education in general) had not out-paced inflation, as it did, for the better part of two decades... No one would complain. A starting salary of 40k to 60k (where you know in a few years you'll be over 100k) is not so bad if you only have $40 to $60k worth of debt. Especially if your salary is increasing at a rate of $5,000 to $10,000 a year (consistently).
