My wife and I were thinking of getting a one bedroom apartment in DC instead of a 2 bedroom to get something a little nicer for our money and still be able to save a lot/pay loans. My question is will it be difficult to do some work at home without an extra bedroom to go into? Anyone else in this situation? Was thinking about putting a desk in the bedroom, and if I have to do work late at night move out to the dining room table or something. It is otherwise a pretty spacious apartment, just no extra bedroom.

You should know best about what you need to work well. Personally, I don't like working on a dining table because I need at least one large monitor. I have a desk in my apartment with a docking station and two monitors.

DC attorney here, also in the market since my lease is up soon. Looking in NW.

I've seen quite a few nice 1 bedrooms with dens out there -- a little more expensive than your standard 1/1, but still well below the average 2/2 price.

Live right outside the district if you want to actually save money. I had a one bedroom on Takoma Park/Silver Spring for like 1100 with a 20 minute commute.

And if you're super serious about saving money buy a house an hour outside DC - my mortgage for a 2000 sq ft house is like 1500/mo and some of that is going into equity.

1. The place we are looking at is right outside of the district, but in VA not MD. MD would be too far from spouse's job

2. No $ for a down payment, plus an hour commute sounds really awful.

Getting a den would be an option, although it would be more expensive than a 1/1, but granted not as expensive than a 2/2 (but closer to the 2/2 than the 1/1). The problem is my wife is set on this one particular apartment, and I'm just trying to see if I can make it work

2L here, but I live in a 1 bedroom currently with my SO. Moved up from 595 to 730, and the 730 is more than enough room, although the 595 as a little small (mostly because of a lack of storage/closet space). Desk in the BR, work in the dining room at night is exactly what I do. I keep a second monitor on the desk, and then have another second monitor in the coat closet in case I ever really need to use it while I'm in the dining room at night. I've never felt like I don't have room to work.

Or just put your desk in the living room no one will care probably just put beer and shit on it

All those shiny new apt buildings in the district have tons of commons space/working areas. Grab one of those.
