USAO Miami v. Brooklyn DA

Post by ahn4264 » Tue Feb 16, 2016 10:00 pm

Hey, a friend of mine is trying to choose between 1L summer internships at the Brooklyn DA and USAO Miami. Any insights? Does it make a difference? Lower T14, looking to do big law in NYC post graduation. Thanks!

I think you, I mean your friend, should pick USAO.

I don't think this matters, to be honest, unless your "friend" has some sort of ancillary benefit from being in either of those markets (i.e. living at home in Miami and therefore not having to sublease an apartment, etc.). USAO might look better if his end goal is AUSA, but Brooklyn DA might look better for firms if he's targeting NYC for a 2L SA. 1L summer doesn't really matter as long as you're doing something legal, so if it were me in this scenario, I would just pick whichever city I would rather spend the summer in

go where you can minimize cost-of-living expenses and not incur any debt. for purposes of biglaw, neither summer gig will make any difference at all.

Literally makes no difference but if your friend doesn't get biglaw, might be good to take the Brooklyn DA gig so that if things turn out there are no firm jobs in their future, they can say they've always wanted to be a prosecutor for NYC DA gigs after graduation.
