Paul Weiss as Rodney Dangerfield
I'm wondering why Paul Weiss doesn't get any respect? I'm referring specifically to Vault rankings where it is at V14. How is Paul Weiss perceived by others in the corporate NYC environment?

Re: Paul Weiss as Rodney Dangerfield
When it comes to OCI-time Paul Weiss is basically viewed as favorably as Simpson, Davis Polk, Skadden, Sullivan, etc. Yalies love the s*** out of PW.
Maybe it has something to do with being known more for lit than corp. The Vault rankings tend to align with firms who do Wall-Street centric corporate work.
Williams & Connolly is way down those rankings, and it's probably the most preftigious landing spot out there.

Lol - maybe the solution is to not rely on the most superficial, poorly thought out rankings in the entire legal industry? Paul Weiss is killing it at M&A, and has got to be one of the top 4 lit shops in the country. I don't work there, but anyone in BigLaw knows that PW is an elite firm.
Just another example of vault rankings not being worth shit

Paul Weiss seems to be doing just fine, I'm not worried about him. At all.
If you're capable of getting a job within the V14 I wouldn't worry about not being prestigious enough. It's true, you'll never get to wash the V14 stench off of you and you'll always be less than a Skadden or DPW bro but your life should still be sufficiently prestigious.
It could be way worse, there are posters on this site that work at V38s. Now that is just sad.

Fun fact when the next wave recession hits, law firms are going to fold in opposite order of Vault rankings. V10 are obviously safe but anyone below I'd be a little worried.BigZuck wrote:Paul Weiss seems to be doing just fine, I'm not worried about him. At all.

P,W bros at 14 you've probably got a solid couple years for your firm to limp along so don't panic yet.

Listen, do you want to have a NYT wedding announcement or what?

I don't think the Times would publish V14 wedding announcements, so call it a lack of a respect, a stench, etc—whatever it is . . . it's real.
In the past year, we found two Cravath lawyers, five Sullivan & Cromwell lawyers, and 11 Davis Polk lawyers whose weddings were announced by The Times.

I hope you are a 1L. Then I would understand where you are coming from. It's enough to know that Vault overall ranking is useless and that nobody interested in litigation would choose Skadden over Williams & Connolly. With this superficial knowledge about law firms, I don't think you are a 2L/3L.
Vault is just one ranking among others and probably the most worthless shit out there. Vault regional (Vault NY, Vault DC etc) rankings are more useful. And Chambers and Partners practice area bands are the most useful if you know what you want to do. You probably know where you want to work. And many people know whether they want to do corporate or litigation. I would just completely disregard the overall Vault rankings and look only at Chambers and if my practice area interest is vague, Vault regional. Vault also has its practice area rankings by the way.
Also, Vault is based on a survey of associates. Chambers Partners bands are based on views of clients and their lawyers and recent work done.
Paul Weiss is one of the very best for litigation in New York. For corporate, it has been growing rapidly but it's definitely not as prestigious as Sulcrom, Cravath, Skadden, DPW, Simpson, yet.

Re: Paul Weiss as Rodney Dangerfield
I can't find it now, but someone a few months ago did an analysis of which law firms/banks were referred to as "the" or "a" (for example: the groom is an associate at Paul, Weiss, the Manhattan law firm vs. the groom is an associate at Paul, Weiss, a Manhattan law firm).cookiejar1 wrote:Listen, do you want to have a NYT wedding announcement or what?

Seems like that's the real test.
