Hi guys,

GW 2E who just passed the patent bar, looking to possibly apply for patent agent positions. Had heard through a friend about Wilson Sonsini in DC... anybody here know about their IP department at their DC office? Culture, morale, pay, etc? I know they are huge out in SF, but don't know about their DC office.

Well, they pay market because they are biglaw. WSGR is not known for knock it out of the park bonuses.

Their strongest practices in DC are antitrust and corporate. I know they have some Tech Trans and some IP (especially that they are building out their privacy practice). I don't know about hard IP.

WSGR is a very good firm, and if you have a chance to work there, I'd take it! (Ex-WSGR Palo Alto here.)

Is anyone out there particularly knowledgeable about that group though? Or have any thoughts about how they, a smaller office of a big firm elsewhere, would hold up against an IP boutique like Finnegan?

WSGR is not well known in DC for patent work. There are a number of better regarded IP firms in DC. For example, Fish, Finnegan, WilmerHale, Sterne Kessler, Foley, Arent Fox, etc. Even some west coast firms have more of a footprint in DC than WSGR, like MoFo, Orrick, and Knobbe.

My advice is to dig around more. There are better options.

most of the patent practitioners in the dc office are bio/chem and life sciences so take that into consideration if you are ee/cs
