Hey all,

Wondering if this is a "thing" or if it ever happens: say you go to NYU, but want to end up in Los Angeles. During OCI, can you say something like "I would jump at the chance to work in the LA office if space permits" or is it usually NYC recruits only for NYC offices?

Also, is it possible to jump offices after a year or so? Say you work in NYC biglaw, then ask the firm if you could move to the Los Angeles office because you prefer west coast. Does this ever happen?

It depends on the way your OCI is structured and what firms/markets come to your OCI. Plenty of NYC firms will interview for LA/DC/CHI/SF/SV offices at NYC schools. At my school(HYS) they had interview slots/interviewers scheduled for different markets, or sometimes for all markets. It really depends.

As to your second question. It is definitely possible to lateral to a different market (not only to stay at same firm, but lateraling to other firms is also, but will depend on firm needs) especially if you start in NYC transactional. All of the advice from recruiters and OCS has told me that if starting in NYC transactional then making a lateral move in even 2 years (seen less) to another market is not highly difficult. YMMV if you're doing litigation, though.
